Climb the cathedral tower before noon

The Cologne Cathedral has the one real line in the city. Entry to the nave is free and the crowd keeps moving. The line is for the south tower: 533 steps, and people are let up in groups, so the wait grows through the day. The treasury has a small line of its own.

Cathedral at opening, Museum Ludwig any day but Monday

The Domplatte, the plaza in front of the cathedral, is fullest from 11:00 to 18:00. Museum Ludwig, next to the station, is visited in steady comfort outside blockbuster weeks and is closed on Mondays. The Heumarkt lanes fill from 18:00 every night.

See the nave at opening. Pair the cathedral morning with Museum Ludwig. Cross the Hohenzollern bridge in the hour before sunset for the view of the cathedral. Keep the afternoon for Ehrenfeld and the Belgian Quarter; they are busy on Fridays.

Cologne Carnival (Kolner Karneval) runs from 4 to 10 February 2027. All 7 days are Packed, and they are February's only Busy or Packed days. August is Packed on all 31 days. Koelner Lichter, the fireworks, makes Saturday 31 July Packed. The Cologne Marathon makes Sunday 4 October 2026 Packed.

Sleep near the right-bank Rheinboulevard

Cologne's crowd keeps to the Domplatte, the Heumarkt brauhaus lanes at night and the Hohenzollern bridge. The right-bank Rheinboulevard, the Belgian Quarter and the Melaten cemetery's avenues, west of the ring, stay quiet.

Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The Belgian Quarter is a quiet area with cafes and small shops. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.

Brauhaus tables at 17:00, standing room later

The Heumarkt lanes and their brewery halls fill every night from 18:00, and weekend tables go early. In a brauhaus the kolsch keeps coming until you cover your glass.

Take a table at 17:00, or come later and stand. On a weekend, do not count on a free table late in the evening. Ehrenfeld and the Belgian Quarter have cafe corners for the afternoon.
