Harbor before 10:00, beaches before 10:30 or after 16:00
The harbor front is full every night in season, from sunset, from the mosque to the mole base. Balos, Falassarna and Elafonissi are busiest from late morning to late afternoon, when the coaches and the boats arrive at the same time. The Municipal Market runs on the morning and winds down by afternoon.
Take coffee on the quay before 10:00 and walk the mole at sunset. Drive to the west-coast beaches before 10:30, or stay after 16:00. For the Samaria Gorge, start with the first buses; the gorge gives you space by kilometre 3.

Market before noon, dinner one street back
The Municipal Market, the Agora, runs on the morning: cheese, herbs, knives. It winds down by afternoon and is quiet on Sundays. The harbor quay is full at dinner time in season. One street back from the water, dinner is quieter and you do not pay the waterfront price.
Go to the Agora before noon. Take your morning coffee on the quay. Eat dinner one street back from the waterfront, or in the neighborhood tavernas of Splantzia.
Pack for sun, early starts and the gorge
