- The Blue Grotto has the longest wait: a row of boats offshore that can take an hour at peak. Go with the first boats, and only when the sea is calm.

Come in February, the driest quiet month
Capri has no Busy or Packed days from November to April. February is the pick: Calm on all 28 days, with about 13 °C by day and rain on only 6 days. November is Calm too, but has rain on 18 days, and December on 14.

In Capri, take May or October, not July
July and August are Capri's peak. August is Packed on all 31 days; July is Packed on 27 and Busy on 4. June and September are Busy on every day. May has 8 Busy or Packed days out of 31, October 1 out of 31.

Go to the Blue Grotto with the first boats
The Blue Grotto has the longest wait on Capri. The entrance is tiny, you transfer to a rowboat, and the line is a row of boats bobbing offshore. At peak it can take an hour. The sea state can close the grotto without notice.
Go the moment it opens, and check the sea state before you give it your morning. If you want it booked, take an island boat tour with a grotto option.
Piazzetta before 10:00, summit in the morning
The Piazzetta is fullest from 11:00 to 17:00, when the day visitors come up from Marina Grande by funicular. The terrace of the Gardens of Augustus has a crowd all midday. The Monte Solaro summit is clearest in the morning, before the haze builds.
Have your coffee on the Piazzetta before 10:00 or after 18:00. Do the Gardens of Augustus early or in the last hour. Go up to Anacapri when the ferries come in, and take the chairlift to Monte Solaro in the morning.
Choose a plan for a Busy day on Capri
Every day from 6 September to the end of the month is Busy on Capri. For each Busy or Packed day, the day page offers three plans, each with its hours and the tickets it needs, if any.
Take One day, the big sights if you have one day; Start early, one ticket if you want to spend little; The quiet side if you would rather walk than queue.
Watch the ferry times, not the cruise ships
Capri is a cruise port, but only on 16 days of the year, in September, May, July and August. The crowd comes by ferry. Every arrival lands at Marina Grande; the funicular queue follows the ferry timetable. Arrivals peak in the late morning; departures cluster from 17:00 to 18:00.
Check the ship days for your dates, then plan around the ferries. Be on the island before the late morning arrivals, or stay the night. From 17:00 the day visitors leave, and the Piazzetta is quieter after 18:00.
Sleep in Anacapri, away from the Piazzetta
Capri's crowd keeps to Marina Grande, the funicular, the Piazzetta and Via Camerelle, and the Blue Grotto's line of boats. Anacapri keeps a village pace, with Villa San Michele and the Solaro chairlift. The eastern walks and Marina Piccola in the late afternoon stay quiet.
Stay in Anacapri, or at least sleep on the island: the day visitors leave between 17:00 and 18:00. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.
Coffee on the Piazzetta before 10:00 or after 18:00
The Piazzetta is a small square, and it is fullest from 11:00 to 17:00. The lanes beyond it thin within a few minutes' walk. On the eastern walks, carry water.
Take your coffee on the Piazzetta before 10:00 or after 18:00. For the rest of the day, the lanes a few minutes from the square are thinner.
Pack for the walks and the boat
In September Capri has about 25 °C by day and rain on about 7 days. The tips above ask for early boats, paved paths where the shade varies, and a chairlift.
Bring shoes for paved paths, a water bottle for the walks, and a charged power bank for tickets and ferry times. You can leave the umbrella at home.
