Book the Magritte; the Grand-Place needs no ticket
The Grand-Place is never closed and never gated, so no ticket helps there. The Magritte museum on the Mont des Arts has timed queues on wet weekends. A booked ticket lets you in at your time.
Book the Magritte before you travel, or be there at opening. It is closed on Mondays. The garden terrace between the museums has a free view over the city.
Grand-Place before 09:00, Atomium on a weekday morning
The Grand-Place is fullest from 11:00 to 22:00; tour groups come from mid-morning and the evening light show draws its own crowd. The Atomium's lift has a queue at weekends and in school holidays. The Magritte is closed on Mondays.
See the Grand-Place three times: before 09:00, at sunset and lit at night. Go up the Atomium on a weekday morning, or look at it from the park for free. Pass Manneken Pis on your way and give the time to the comic murals instead.

Brussels' crowd keeps to the Grand-Place, the restaurant alleys of the Ilot Sacre and the Manneken corner. The Sablon and the Marolles, the lawns of the Cinquantenaire and the Parc de Bruxelles stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The Brussels page lists them and links to hotels near them.
Eat before 19:00, or late
The beer cafes fill every night. The fish restaurants of Sainte-Catherine and the frites shops each have their own line. One restaurant lane beside the Grand-Place is dense and full of touts.
Take an early table before 19:00, or a late one. A frites line moves faster than it looks. Walk through the lane with the touts, but eat elsewhere. The flea market of the Marolles is a morning visit.
Pack for Brussels' early starts and rain
In September Brussels has about 21 °C by day and rain on about 11 days. The tips above ask for early starts and a lot of walking.
