The Belfry on the Markt has the longest wait in Bruges. The climb is 366 steps, and only a set number of people may be on the stairs at once, so the wait at the base grows through the day. A timed ticket fixes your time to go up.
Book the Belfry timed climb for the opening hour before you travel, or be at the door at opening. The Markt below is fullest from 11:00 to 17:00; see it before or after those hours.
Boats first or last, the Madonna at opening
The Markt, the Burg and the Rozenhoedkaai are fullest from 11:00 to 17:00. At the canal jetties the midday queue in season lasts longer than the half-hour boat ride. Coach groups fill the chapel with Michelangelo's Madonna; the Memling shrine room next to it stays quiet.
Take the first or the last boat of the day. See the Church of Our Lady and Sint-Jans Hospital at the opening hour, on one walk, before the groups arrive. Keep the afternoon for Sint-Anna and the windmills, 10 minutes from the Markt.
