Start the Freedom Trail from the Common by 9
The Freedom Trail links 16 sites through downtown. The trail itself has no gate, but Faneuil Hall's marketplace and the Old North Church fill with tour groups at midday.
Walk it from the Common by 9 in the morning and you stay ahead of the guided groups. Save Quincy Market's food hall for a quiet hour. A guided walk can be booked if you want a guide.
Fenway on non-game mornings, Harvard any day
Fenway Park sells tours steadily; on game nights the whole Fenway quarter becomes the crowd, with Lansdowne Street at its centre. Across the river, Harvard Yard has tour clusters around the John Harvard statue, but the museums rarely have lines and the banks of the Charles never do.
Book a Fenway tour for a morning without a game; on a game day, hold a ticket or watch from a bar. Cross the river for half a day at Harvard. On the water side, the Harborwalk and the island ferries stay uncrowded.

The cannoli shops in the North End have lines at all hours, and on weekend evenings the dinner waits spill onto Hanover Street. Festival weekends double everything. Quincy Market's food hall peaks at midday.
