Walk Bari Vecchia early, or book a morning walk
Bari Vecchia is where Bari's crowd is thickest. Its lanes, and Strada delle Orecchiette most of all, tighten on cruise mornings and on weekend evenings. Late morning on a ship day is the fullest time. There is no ticket, so the hour you go is what matters.
Go early in the morning for the pasta makers in the doorways and the bakeries, or late in the evening for the squares. If you want a guide, book the old town street food walk with a morning start.
Basilica in the morning, seafront in the evening
The Basilica di San Nicola follows its services, not the sightseers; the crypt is the reason to go. The Lungomare is at its best during the evening walk and has room for any crowd. The Castello Svevo is rarely more than comfortably full.
Visit the basilica between services, in the morning. Take the castle at midday, when the lanes are hot. Walk the Lungomare in the evening. For Polignano a Mare, take the regional train on a weekday morning.
Give a Busy day in Bari a plan
From 6 September, Bari has 14 Busy or Packed days in September 2026. Each Busy or Packed day page offers three plans, with the hours to go and the tickets, if any, that each plan needs.
Pick One day, the big sights if you have one day; Start early, one ticket if you want to spend little; The quiet side if you want to stay out of the lanes altogether.
Check the ship days before you pick a date
Bari is a cruise port. Ships call on 158 days of the coming year, in every month. May has 19 ship days, October 18, July and August 17 each. December and February have 5 each. On a ship day the old town lanes and the routes to the basilica are fullest in the late morning.
Check the ship calendar for your dates. On a ship day, walk Bari Vecchia early in the morning or in the evening, and spend the late morning on the Lungomare or in the Castello Svevo.
Sleep near the Lungomare or the Murat quarter
Bari's crowd keeps to the old town: Strada delle Orecchiette and the routes to the basilica on ship mornings, Piazza del Ferrarese on weekend evenings. The Lungomare, the basilica's cloister quarter and the shopping streets of the Murat quarter stay quiet.
Stay near the Lungomare or in the Murat quarter, away from the old town lanes. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.
Eat in the old town early or late
In Bari Vecchia, women roll orecchiette in open doorways on Strada delle Orecchiette. The lane is fullest in the late morning on ship days. Piazza del Ferrarese is full on weekend evenings. The evening walk is when the Lungomare is at its best.
Go to Strada delle Orecchiette and the bakeries in the morning. Eat in the old town squares late in the evening, or on a weekday. Join the evening walk on the Lungomare before or after dinner.
Pack for heat and early mornings
In September Bari has about 28 °C by day and rain on about 5 days. The tips above ask for early mornings, evening walks and a lot of time on foot in the lanes.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a water bottle, and a charged power bank for tickets and maps. You can leave the umbrella at home.
Send the plan to your group, set a reminder
