Book a timed ticket for the Acropolis
The Acropolis has the longest lines in Athens. Entry is by timed ticket, and the number of people on the rock at one time is capped. Cruise groups arrive from the middle of the morning. The path up is fullest from 10:00 to 14:00, and the marble is hot at midday.
Book the timed ticket before you fly. Take the first slot of the day or the last 90 minutes, never the middle. A ticket with a time slot lets you in at your time.
Acropolis Museum in the evening, Plaka before 10:00
The Acropolis Museum is fullest right after the morning Acropolis crowd comes down; in season its late Friday hours are quiet. Plaka's main lanes fill after 10:00. The changing of the guard at Syntagma draws a crowd on the hour; the full ceremony is on Sunday at 11:00.
See the museum before the Acropolis or in the evening. Walk Plaka before 10:00. With a combined ticket, do the Acropolis at dawn and the Ancient Agora at 10:00. Take Lycabettus Hill at dusk on a weekday, not at sunset.

The Athens crowd keeps to the Acropolis path, Plaka's main lanes and Adrianou, and Monastiraki square. The Ancient Agora, the National Garden and Zappeion, Anafiotika, Kerameikos and Philopappos Hill stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. The city page names them and links to hotels there.
Eat in Plaka before or after the meal hours
Plaka's main lanes and Adrianou are at their densest at meal hours. Monastiraki square, with the flea market, is busy all day.
Eat early or late if you eat in Plaka. When the lanes are full, the steps of Anafiotika above them are quiet.
Pack for heat and early starts
In September Athens has about 29 °C by day and rain on about 4 days. The marble of the Acropolis is hot at midday, and the tips above ask for early starts and a lot of walking.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a water bottle, a hat, and a charged phone or power bank for tickets and maps. You can leave the umbrella at home.
