Book a time slot for the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum has timed entry. The room with The Night Watch is where the crowd gathers; the rest of the museum has space even at peak. A ticket with a time slot lets you in at your time.
Book the first slot and go to the Gallery of Honour first. Or come after 15:00, when the tour groups have finished their round.
Kalverstraat before 11:00, museums at first or last slot
The route from the station over the Dam to the Kalverstraat is fullest from 11:00 to 22:00. The Van Gogh Museum sells timed tickets only, and summer days sell out. The Anne Frank House releases its online tickets weeks ahead; peak dates go in minutes.
Walk the old centre before 11:00. At the Van Gogh Museum, book days ahead and take the first or last slot. For the Anne Frank House, set a reminder for the release day; evening slots are quietest inside.
Give a Busy day in Amsterdam a plan

Check the ship days: 56 in the year
Amsterdam is a cruise port. Ships call on 56 days in the year. July has 13 ship days, May 10 and June 8. January and March have no ship calls.
Check the ships page for your dates before you book. On a ship day, take the first slot at the museums and walk the western side of the canal ring, where it stays quieter.
Sleep near the ring's western arcs
Amsterdam's crowd keeps to the route from the station to the Kalverstraat, the Museumplein's ticket gates, the red-light lanes on weekend evenings and the central boat jetties at midday. Noord, across the IJ, the Plantage quarter and the western side of the canal ring stay quiet.
Stay a few stops from the centre, near one of the quiet places. On King's Day (27 April) and the Pride canal parade (7 August) the canal belt itself is full; Oost and Noord still have room.
Markets on Saturday, cafes on a weekday morning
The Jordaan and the Nine Streets are at full flow on Saturday, when the Noordermarkt is on. On weekday mornings the lanes and cafe corners are quiet again. In Noord, across the IJ, free ferries take you to waterside cafes.
Go to the Noordermarkt on Saturday if the market is what you want. Take the cafes on a weekday morning. For a quiet coffee by the water, take the free ferry to Noord.
Pack for rain and early starts
In September Amsterdam has about 20 °C by day and rain on about 12 days. The tips above ask for early starts, a lot of walking and tickets on your phone.
Bring shoes you can walk in for hours, a power bank for the tickets and maps on your phone, and a compact umbrella.
