Book a boat instead of the coast road
In summer the SS163 coast road is a traffic jam. Buses and cars move slowly, worst at midday and in the early evening. The coast is best seen from the water. Go by boat whenever the sea allows.
Book a coast boat tour for the morning, not for noon. If you must take the bus between the towns, allow extra time for the road.
The Duomo staircase before 10:00 or after 17:00
The Duomo staircase is the busiest point in town. People from the boats and coaches fill the piazza below from about 10:00. The cloister and crypt stay calm even when the steps are full. The town beach is small and full by mid-morning in season.
Climb the staircase at breakfast or after the day boats have left. Take a boat taxi before 10:30 to Duoglio or Santa Croce for space. At the midday peak, walk into the Valle dei Mulini: it is cool even in August.

Sleep away from the Piazza Duomo
Amalfi's crowd keeps to the Piazza Duomo, the main lane from the harbour to the valley, the coast road and the town beach. The Valle dei Mulini behind the Duomo, Ravello above the town and Atrani, one headland east, stay quiet.
Stay near one of the quiet places. Atrani is a five-minute walk from Amalfi and keeps village hours. The city page names the quiet places and links to hotels there.
Take a long lunch in Ravello at midday
The coast road is at its worst at midday and in the early evening, and the town beach is full by mid-morning. Ravello sits above the town, with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone and the Terrace of Infinity.
Go up to Ravello by bus or on foot mid-morning. Walk the gardens, have a long lunch, and come down in the late afternoon. Take breakfast in Amalfi before you climb the Duomo staircase.
Pack for steps, boats and early starts
In September Amalfi has about 28 °C by day and rain on about 8 days. The tips above ask for early starts, a long staircase and boat rides. July and August reach about 31 °C.
