Pictures of Venice post COVID-19 lockdown

Venice in August is normally so crowded that the experience is not very enjoyable. In fact, we normally recommend completely avoiding Venice during this peak season month. But like everything else this year, peak season 2020 is different. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Venice is experiencing a summer without overtourism. The coronavirus has stopped cruise ships from coming while also blocking Americans and many others living outside the EU from coming to the beautiful city in the north of Italy. Although the lockdown in Italy is over and the country is succesfully keeping the number of new infections low, Venice remains without crowds.

Today, August 12, would normally be one of the busiest Wednesdays of the year in Venice. Friends of Avoid Crowds (Marianne Schrama & family) are currently in Venice and sent us the following pictures. Although there are other tourists, the images show an almost empty Venice unlike any other summer.
